Tough Little DAQ

This DAQ puts is in our automated product testing machines. The combination of easy programming, great universal library, and its ability to be on for days at a time, make it the DAQ for our testing. We currently have 7 production testers that use this exact model. Because it is so easy, we can pretty much program the tester before it is even built.

easy, many features, and very accurate

I have purchased this product to control a small peristaltic pump, Watson-Marlow 120U, for feeding a research bioreactor. Although I have never done this before, I was able to connect the pump with the device, and write custom software (in C# and Python) very easily. The pump has then been calibrated and it is now operating very reliably and accurately. For the actual communication between the computer, the daq device, and the pump, I used C# and the provided standard library. This was my first ever programming in C# and it really was easy. The downsides: 1. I was having issues with the voltage being too high between the grounds of the pump and the device. (very likely, this this is not a malfunction of the daq device).Tech support was friendly, patient, but did not really help. 2. I wish they also provided a Python library so I could skip C# entirely.

Found Everywhere

We started using this product last year to substitute for another data acquisition device that had malfunctioned. With just a software download and a few minor tweaks our tester functioned just as before, but we saved a lot of money. Now, seven of our testers include this same daq, which is used to control pressure regulators and receive data from various sensors. We can program at our workstations and then send the software to the field. It makes our testers almost plug-and-play.

What is the smallest voltage that this DAQ can read? Assuming the +/- 2.5 V setting and 13 bit resolution, this seems to mean that the device can read down to 0.6 mV resolution, is this right or are there some caveats?

The maximum resolution for the USB-1208HS series is 13 bits. In order to realize the 13 bits of resolution there is one condition. The USB-1208HS will need to be configured for differential inputs. The USB-1208HS series supports both single ended and differential analog inputs. When setup for differential inputs the USB-1208HS supports 13 bits of resolution for the following software selectable input ranges; +-20V, +-10V, & +-5V. When set for single ended inputs the resolution is reduced to 12 bits for the following input ranges; +-10V, +-5V, +-2.5V, & 0-10V. If we use your example below and set the USB-1208HS to single ended and +-2.5V you would have an LSB of 1.22mV.

I have some troubles to configure the AUXPORT on USB1208HS-2AO. If I configure some bits in DIGITALOUT and some others in DIGITALIN, I have error n°42 when I do cbDOut on the board (which means "Digital port not configured correctly for requested operation"). If I configure the entire port in DIGITALOUT, it is working properly. What is the problem ? Overmore, when I try to have the number of bits on AUXPORT (with cbGetConfig(DIGITALINFO, BoardNum, AUXPORT, NbBits)), it returns error n°105 which means "Invalid configuration item specified." Thanks for your help.

Once you call DConfigBit to configure the direction of a single bit (or said a better way, once you mix the direction of bits in the digital port), then you can no longer call the port-wise functions (DOut or Din). Instead, call DBitOut or DBitIn, which are the bit-wise functions.As for cbGetCofig, the following works properly (returns the value 16, which is the number of DIO bits on the USB-1208HS series devices): InfoType = DIGITALINFO = 3 DevNum = 0 ConfigItem = DINUMBITS = 6

The USB-1208HS series’ timer outputs will continue to run (outputting the number of pulses at the frequency and duty cycle you requested) until you stop It via a software call. So perhaps you don’t need to write out to the timer as often as you say (< 1 mS). If you do have to, the typical write time is around 0.5 to 1.0 mS. This can be done concurrent to an A/D scan at up to 1 MHz aggregate (note that the A/D data arrives to your program in packets, with a new packet about every 10 mS. If you need fresh A/D data sooner, you could perform a software paced read instead of a scan, which will take 0.25 to 0.5 mS per channel, but won’t be concurrent with the timer access (timer access would have to slow to access the A/D). Thus what you are asking for is very close to the best performance we can expect, so it could not be guaranteed on all systems. Also, we don’t offer a Delphi header file or examples with our Universal Library API. But Delphi, as with any language that can call a DLL, could be used with some effort.

The creation of the CB.CFG file by InstaCal is required, but is not normally of concern to users. You are probably on Windows 7 or 8, on which the location of CB.CFG is under a hidden Windows folder named ProgramData. You can unhide that folder using Windows Explorer. Analog signals/sensors output within a defined range i.e. +-10 or +-5. Having selectable input ranges built into our DAQ devices gives you the capability to choose the input range that best fits your signal. When using our ULx support for NI LabVIEW the input ranges would be selected through the “Create Channel” vi. The most efficient way (when using our ULx drivers for selecting your input range) would be to specify a min and max input value and let our ULx drivers select the “Best” range for your signal that our DAQ device supports.
