Easy to use & easy integration with Matlab

I bought this product primarily for its Matlab integration functionality (as advertised) and was not disappointed. We are using it in proof-of-concept/alpha design level projects in advance of migrating to a fully embedded product solution and have purchased additional units to be used in other projects as well. It was very easy to get up and running (using the examples and documentation provided by MCC & Matlab) and has worked flawlessly and continuously ever since. The only 'bump in the road' was the observation that you need to open the InstaCal application when you plug a different MCC ADC into the PC so that the InstaCal application can remove the previous device and configure the new one. This is required for Matlab to find the device. I plan on using more of these modules and have recommended to others as well.

Very good value for money and tremendous tech. support

My need was pretty straightforward: simultaneous acquisition of 5 <1Vpp signals up to 1kHz. Timing and phase accuracy are musts. Because my application resembles a lock-in amplifier, the noise specifications of this low cost model are acceptable. The key must-have features this unit has are: simultaneous and continuous acquisition, USB (self-powered) and ability to control with Python. I am so impressed with MCC that Python support is provided. Moreover, lots of examples programs are available to make it easier to learn how to get the most from the unit. I encountered a problem with one of the examples when running it with 64-bit Python vs. 32-bit. I contacted Tech Support and received a reply overnight. Initially, MCC couldn't reproduce the error. Much to my amazement, about a week letter, Jeff in Tech Support phoned me to let me know that the engineers has found the problem and had updated the entire Python package. I tried it and it worked like a charm. I should also say that MCC's pre-sales support is great. Every product page as a Q&A section. Use it! I have always received a reply within 24hrs. In short, MCC provides the essential trio of solid hardware, thorough documentation for the hardware and development software, and responsive support. Very happy.

Max throughput evaluation

Rating is strictly based on applicability toward servo control. Was promised extremely high throughput (sample to output time) but discovered the module maxes out at slightly over 200Hz which takes it out of the arena of servo control. Board should be perfectly suitable for sample 'scope programs or where large volumes of data can be sampled for display at a later time such as warehouse thermocouples, energy management etc.

Hello Ricko - The USB-1608FS-PLUS can acquire AI data very fast in scan mode (100 KHz per channel), though each packet contains many samples, and thus there is a lag in new data reaching the PC. But UL programmers can improve on this by specifying the SINGLEIO mode for AInScan, which instructs the hardware to send up each and every new AI sample (one per channel) to the PC … resulting in new AI values being sent to the PC at intervals as narrow as 0.1 mS. The other AI function (AIn) is slower, returning one reading on one channel in about 2 to 4 mS. In any case, if the goal is to turn on/off a digital output after each analog reading, calling DOut itself takes about 5 mS on this model, and was likely the gating factor. While a different model (USB-1608G) is faster (sub mS for both AIn and DOut), USB bus access time is still an overriding factor.

A very good product.

Works very well. Excellent value for money.. We use these as a component buried inside a portable data acquisition system based on a Raspberry Pi running Linux. Application is mechanical testing. Data comes from LVDTs, load cells and accelerometers.

Good and simple product

We use this board with C# language. We integrate in a measurement set-up and we use both analog and digital input. The integration was good and the measurement was repeatible. Sometime we found some problem with the USB interface but the lastest version seems more affordable.

Overall an inexpensive but quite useful device

We used this device to read several pressure, flow, thrust and temperature measurements for hybrid rocket experiments. Easily incorporated by labVIEW, with simple, consistent operation. Not as useful for high accuracy or high data rates. Often, experimenters "fail-safe" by getting equipment that is more capable than they need and it is just a wasted effort. This product was more than sufficient and the money saved allowed us to do more with less.

Is this unit compatible with the Python library? If so, can I achieve "near real-time" uninterrupted AD capture? I see a Python example that acquires in the background. I'd like to achieve double buffer-like acquisition. e.g., sampling continuously at 40kS/s and retrieving 1sec chunks of data for real-time analysis. Hope this makes sense. Also, is the difference between the standard and OEM version just the case? Thanks.

Yes, the USB-1608FS-Plus is compatible with our Python library. Based on the information provided you should have no problems capturing “Near Real-Time” data using the USB-1608FS-Plus and our Python library. ULAI06.py is a good example on how to double buffer an analog input scan. The enclosure is one of two differences between the standard and the OEM version. The other would be the screw terminals used on the standard version versus the header pins on the OEM.

The analog inputs and counter inputs are not synchronous. Therefore your data would not be correlated. For this you would need to use our USB-1808. When setup to utilize BURSTIO you are limited to a finite scan of <= 32kS. BURSTIO offers faster sample rates by using the onboard FIFO for data storage. After your data acquisition has completed you can then transfer your data to your computer. By doing this you can achieve faster sample rates because you are not limited by the constraints of the USB bus. When setup for BURSTIO “CONTINUOUS” data collection in not supported. I have a pulse every 1 kHz with a precise trigger to match, and seek to record its shape for later integration. What is internal clock rate? I will set internal delay to match pulse location in time. What stops the recording of data? Another trigger? Software count? I might have 3 channels simultaneous, but might not want to digitize the complete 1 msec. Buffer size for this application is another question. How do your drivers control this hardware setup? May use Labview or a windows .dll under python.

The trigger starts a sampling session (what we call a Scan). You specify the number of samples to collect in the scan, which is usually multiple samples per channel. The rate that the samples are collected can be either the internal clock (at the rate you request) or by an external clock signal. The maximum rate is 100 KHz, so that would be 10 usec between consecutive samples on the same channel. There is overhead to set up for the next scan (i.e. to get ready for the next trigger). The overhead is system specific, but is on the order of 50 msec. If the overhead of starting the next scan is too high, then you could avoid using the trigger altogether, and use only an external clock. For each rising edge of the clock, all 3 of your channels will be sampled once each. Our ULx for LabVIEW driver allows for very large buffers (no loss of data). The same for our Universal Library API/DLL. Python is not officially supported, but any language can call our DLL. The USB-1608FS-PLUS does not have a stop trigger. The sampling can either be continuous (stopped by the programmer) or can collect for a finite number of samples.

The USB-1608FS-Plus has no anti-aliasing filtering built into the hardware or the firmware. Nor does the provided software have any filtering capabilities. Software filtering is available through our DASYLab BASIC graphical programming language. The high/low pass filtering options available in DASYLab are the Butterworth, Bessel, Chebyshev 0.5 and the Chebyshev 2.

Hello JuJu, Yes, that is exactly what it means. Each channel a maximum sample rate of 100kS/sec. Which means that you could sample 4 channels at their max rate of 100kS/sec (400kS/sec max) or 8 channels at 50kS/sec per channel. The BURSTIO lets you increase your overall sample rate to 800K. The individual sample rate of 100kS/channel does not change and the data is limited to the on board FIFO (32K). Hello Ryan, Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, two USB-1608FS-Plus units can be synchronized together resulting in 16 simultaneous inputs. By utilizing the “Synch” (pin 36) in a master slave configuration you can use the clock from one USB-1608FS-Plus as a master and control the second USB-1608FS-Plus as a slave unit. This allows you to expand your channel count to 16 simultaneous inputs. This would give you the ability to read the buffer and retrieve your data at any given moment. To do this you would use our Universal Library for .NET

Hi Finmac - No, it will not be able to meet ±1LSB limit across 8 channels. The results can vary by the amount of offset, gain, linearity and noise. See the Accuracy section on page 13 of the User Manual for more information: http://www.mccdaq.com/PDFs/manuals/USB-1608FS-Plus.pdf. For both devices - frequency should not affect accuracy results while amplitude variations are subject to changes in gain error. Temperature changes will produce variations in gain and offset results.

Hello Mitch - Thermocouple measurements are not possible with the USB-1608FS, or with any other general purpose A/D board. The three main reasons are the following: Not enough amplification, no CJC compensation, no low-pass filtering. This DAQ model has 8 individual A/D ICs, all clocked in parallel. Inside each A/D is the equivalent of a sample-and-hold, so we did not need to add our own external to the A/Ds.

Currently running an extended scan for 10 seconds where timing is very important at a high scan rate (near max of 100 kS/s). Since FIFO is 32,768 samples, I was curious how long it takes to load data from FIFO in packets to the Windows buffer while using AInScan in C#.

Hello - The buffer transfers not when the FIFO is full, but rather at 8K sample packets. It takes roughly 1mS to transfer a packet. So to transfer 10 seconds of data would take about 10.001 seconds.
