battery life

The wireless feature of this logger is great. However, with my application I need to be able to log for several hours. I have noticed that when the batteries are at mid life, the BT links reliability is not very good. So I used the rechargeable batteries, however the link has issues even sooner than alkaline. I suspect, that the BT radio has better range when the batteries are new, and closer to 3V total, and when they dip down to 2.7 or less the range starts to degrade. It would be nice if it had a third battery, and then if it isn't currently 3V regulated so the range stays consistent. It is working for more needs, however i am swapping batteries out almost daily.

The BTH-1208LS should be able to scan at full rate for at least 10 hours on a set of alkaline batteries. Distance to the Bluetooth host and any interference (walls) can also contribute to reduced run time because the Bluetooth firmware increases the radio power when signal levels are low. Thus drawing more power. Also battery voltage should not have any impact on the device performance until it drops to the shutoff point which is 1.8V. One solution for extended run time applications is to purchase an external USB battery pack and power the device from it using the USB port.

The product has great features but

The product has many good features, but there is very limited documentation as to how to get the most out for the applications. Additional application notes and list of accessories would be a convenient thing to have. For instance, simple list of temperature probes that would be compatible with the system would make it easy for the users to get started immediately.

The BTH-1208LS is setup to measure voltage. Unfortunately, it cannot interface directly with temperature measuring sensors since it lacks some necessary signal conditioning required by the sensors. The typical range for the BTH-1208LS is approximately 10m. Please contact Sales Engineering at 1-800-234-4232 Ext-3 to discuss other MCC products that are designed for temperature measurement.

The BTH-1208LS supports an event counter. Event counters can count the number of times a digital signal changes and the reading of these event counters is software paced. Therefore, to determine the period between pulses you would have to use software calculations to do so. Below is a link to a knowledgebase article covering the event counters used on MCC products. Through the support of our ULx for NI LabVIEW drivers, you can easily develop LabVIEW applications using the BTH-1208LS. The BTH-1208LS is capable of handling the ADC, the processing of the incoming signals (micro processing) and the Bluetooth communication. As mentioned, you are responsible for all signal conditioning required prior to connecting the BTH-1208LS.

The BTH-1208LS does not include support for I2C or SPI communications protocol. MCC does not currently have a product that can communicate with I2C or SPI serial devices.

Hello - The BTH-1208LS does NOT ship with a Certificate of Calibration but it is calibrated at the factory prior to shipment (as are all Measurement Computing products that require calibration). Hello Roedel - Thank you for your inquiry. The BTH-1208LS supports 8 single ended or 4 differential inputs with several software selectable input ranges. However, all of your input signals require some form of signal conditioning which the BTH-1208LS does NOT support. If you were to provide the necessary external signal conditioning, it would be feasible to develop an Android application using our Android library and the BTH-1208LS (or any other Android supported USB product).

Be sure to follow the pairing steps in the following Quickstart Guide: http://www.mccdaq.com/PDFs/manuals/QS-BTH-1208LS.pdf The most common reasons pairing cannot be achieved are: 1) BTH-1208LS is still connected to the computer via a USB cable. 2) The BTH-1208LS is not actually put into pairing mode. Be sure to hold the button in long enough for the LED to flash rapidly. 3) Allow the O/S enough time to complete the pairing process, before taking the BTH-1208LS out of pairing mode.

I may be misunderstanding your question, but the voltage supply and power consumption of your voltage sensor is entirely independent of the DAQ device that you send the sensor's output to for recording. The voltage inputs of DAQ systems in general are high impedance. Regarding the frequency issue, you need to sample a frequency at 10 times the frequency in order to get amplitude error down to under 4%; I'm sure you want that or better. This device won't sample fast enough to achieve this at frequencies higher than 100 Hz. It's common for people to confuse the digital and analog worlds. When you use a digital recorder to observe analog events, the digital recorder takes tiny snapshots of the event. If you expect to capture the peak of a wave you have to make sure the recorder takes a picture at that time, and since you don't know when the peak is going to arrive you have to sample fast enough that the worst-case timing error (the time between the peak and when the nearest snapshot is taken) will result in an error that's within your error criteria. A little trigonometry and the division of a sine wave into 10 parts will show what the worst-case error will be.

The BTH-1208LS can send A/D data wirelessly at an aggregate rate of 1 KHz. So assuming you have just one sensor to monitor at a time, the full 1 KHz can be dedicated to that one sensor (meaning a new data point will be captured every 1 mS). Every 1 mS could be cutting it close for a signal with an upper frequency of “a few hundred” Hz. As for current draw by the A/D from your sensor, it is a function of the voltage being measured (Vin). The formula is: current in mA = 8.181 * Vin -12.

The BTH-1208LS can measure voltage, but cannot interface directly to a thermocouple. Thermocouples require signal conditioning (high amplification, cold junction compensation, filtering, linearization) that is not present in this DAQ model. The BTH-1208LS, combined with a UL for Android program, can display voltage values collected wirelessly (via Bluetooth).

1) Software is probably the easiest and most straight forward way to measure a frequency with an analog input. If you were to use software you would be using what is called an FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) In order to use an FFT you will have to sample (at a minimum) at twice the signals input frequency (Nyquist Theorem). In this case the DAQ devices sample rate would need to be 2000Hz or greater. So the BTH-1208LS when in Bluetooth mode (1.2KS/sec) would not be fast enough. However, when in USB mode the BTH-1208LS has a sample rate of 50KS/sec which would be more than enough to sample your 1000Hz squarewave. For software you could use our Universal Library to collect an array of voltage data, and call into any third party package that supports an FFT or you could use our DASYLab BASIC graphical programming language to acquire data using its FFT function. http://www.mccdaq.com/products/dasylab_basic.htm 2) You can also use the Event counter on our DAQ devices and setup a crude way to measure frequency. By using a Windows timer with the Event counter library function call you can use the timer interval and the captured events to calculate the frequency. Note that this is not a highly accurate method, due to jitter in the polled reading of the counter, given windows timing and bus access. 3) Measurement Computing also has other DAQ devices that utilize a more sophisticated counter/timer that can be used as well. Our USB-1616HS Series, and our USB-QUAD08 would both have support for frequency measurements.

Frequency isn't a value that can be recorded by a DAQ. Frequency is the rate of change in a voltage, not the value of the voltage itself. In order to measure a 1000Hz square wave using a DAQ, you need to sample at more than 2000 S/s, then analyze the data in software to calculate the frequency. The software would have to do the updating of the calculation result at >10Hz; the DAQ doesn't do that part. What you should do is pass the square wave into a frequency-to-voltage converter and use the DAQ to record the voltage output of the converter at >10Hz, then convert the voltage to frequency values.

Hi Kevin 55 - It sounds like you want to get a new frequency reading every 100 mS. The event counter is not a good fit for trying to measure frequency that often, since reading the counter is software polled, and there will be jitter between counter reads.

The answer to your questions #1 and #2 are both yes. As for question #3, the BTH-1208LS model has an event counter. The event counter has no hardware gating, so it is not an ideal match for measuring frequency. However, a fairly decent frequency measurement can be made by reading the counter twice … X seconds apart, subtracting the two values, and dividing by X to get Hertz. You would code this strategy into your Java program.
